5 Tips for Taking Better Halloween Portraits

As a parent you spend a lot of time and/or money on your Child's Halloween costume.   The bad thing about this is that in most cases your child only wears this outfit one or two times.  The best way to remember these amazing costumes is with photos! Below are some tips on how to ensure that your photos will be better and more exciting then the classic mug shot images from our childhood.

1: Go outside!

When I think of Halloween photos from my childhood, I think of when my sisters and I stood in a line looking uncomfortable in front of a white wall.  This habit needs to change! Kids don’t like being inside, so take them outside!  Being outside makes for a more dynamic background and setting for these cherished memories.

2: Take photos earlier in the evening

Sunset and twilight makes for great Halloween photos! It adds a creepy effect that goes with Halloween so well. Your kids will be much easier to photograph if you take these photos before trick or treating, since they will be excited to go and not as tired as they will be after.

3: Get on their level

Kneel, Sit, bend, lay down, do whatever it takes to get at eye level with your child!  This creates a more dynamic and personal look.  Being at their level also allows you to see more of the costume, as compared to standing above them and looking down.

4: Don’t be afraid to use your flash

Almost all cameras have flashes that are really smart! Don’t be intimidated by the flash, let it do its work.  A flash will make your child stand out better in front of the night scenery, and show off all the fine details of their costume.

5: Get into Character

Let your kids have fun! Tell them to act like the characters they are dressed as. This lets the kids feel more relaxed, and have more fun! Snap plenty of pictured while they are jumping, buzzing, and swirling around. You’ll be sure to get some good action shots that show off the costume and your Child's personality.
